Hello and thanks for reading my newsletter on art and the changing seasons.
We’ve reached the end of another mini season, or sekki. Somehow the process of marking these longer periods of time seems to go by more quickly than the microseasons!
It has been a moment of transition for me - After a couple weeks of holiday, I’ve felt life lurch back into normality with the start of a new term alongside the subtle autumnal vibes. I have mixed feelings about this time of year - sadness of a summer ending mixed with anticipation for autumn, often resulting in a burst of creativity and a sense of beginnings.
I’ve been reading Rules of Civility by Amour Towles at the moment, in which I stumbled upon a similar sentiment:
“That’s the way we New Yorkers feel about fall. Come September, despite the waning hours, despite the leaves succumbing to the weight of gray autumnal rains, there is a certain relief to having the long days of summer behind us; and there’s a paradoxical sense of rejuvenation in the air”.
Anyways, here are some things I noticed over the past few weeks:
We caught the very beginning of heather blossoming on our train up north at the start of the month.
Brambles/Blackberries are in season at the moment, growing along nearly every path I’ve seen.
Bindweed is flowering along the Water of Leith - while generally good for the local pollinators, this plant is apparently a nightmare to get rid of in a garden.
Nasturtiums are also flowering at the moment too — these are edible!
